Reformed Church in America (RCA) and Faith Church

We are a member of the Reformed Church in America which is made up of about 950 congregations in the United States and Canada.  These congregations are organized into 46 classes and eight regional synods.  We are a member of the Wisconsin Classis and the Regional Synod of Mid-America.

The highest level of assembly is the General Synod which consists of ministers and elder delegates from each of the 46 classes.  The General Synod meets annually to make decisions on behalf of the entire Reformed Church.

The total RCA membership is more than 300,000 individuals.  Faith Church has a total membership of about 350 individuals.  Over 50% of our members are under the age of 35.

Church History

Faith Reformed Church began as an offshoot of the First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove.  Growth at First Reformed Church during the late 1950s and early 1960s lead to overcrowding at Sunday morning worship services.  A second Sunday morning worship service was introduced.  Finally in 1964 a small group from First Reformed decided to start a new church.  The first worship service was held on July 12, 1964 in the gymnasium of the Cedar Grove Elementary School (currently the site of the public library).

On January 12, 1965 Faith Reformed Church was officially organized under the Classis of Wisconsin within the Reformed Church in America (RCA).  This meeting was attended by 90 eligible voters representing approximately 40 families.  The name Faith Reformed Church was officially selected and the first twelve member consistory was elected.

Our first pastor, Rev. John Van Mantgem, was installed on July 17, 1965.  He served Faith Reformed Church until October 1970.  During this time the planning, construction and dedication of our present church building were completed.

The second pastor of Faith Reformed Church was Rev. Phillip Frens.  He was installed on June 16, 1971 and served Faith Church for just over three years.  He was followed by the Rev. Leon Dykstra who was installed on January 28, 1975 and continued serving Faith Church until his retirement in 1989.

From 1989 through August 2001 we were led by the Rev. Van Rathbun.  During this time the number of young families in attendance grew significantly.  Additional offices, meeting rooms and an expanded foyer were completed during this time.

Currently, our Senior Pastor is the Rev. Earl Slotman.  Pastor Earl, as he prefers to be called, began his ministry at Faith Church in October 2002.  He works closely with Tom Davila, our Director of Christian Discipleship.  Tom came to Faith Church in September 1998.  The Faith Church family currently consists of approximately 350 members with over 50% of them being under age 35.

Community

Cedar Grove is a small family-oriented village with a population approaching 2,000 residents.  It is located 15 miles south of the city of Sheboygan with its 50,000 population and 45 miles north of the Milwaukee metropolitan area.  It is within two miles of Lake Michigan.  The surrounding area consists mainly of farmland.

Cedar Grove has a distinct Dutch heritage and tradition with many residents who are long time members of the community.  The village was founded in 1847 by Dutch immigrants.  A sesquicentennial celebration was held in 1997 which included a visit by Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands.  The community takes pride in its Dutch heritage and annually holds a Holland Festival the last Friday and Saturday in July.  This festival includes a parade, Dutch dancers, ethnic foods, entertainment in the park and many other diverse activities.

Cedar Grove has grown at a moderate pace (24%) over the last 10 years and as a result is becoming more diverse.  The school system is the community’s largest employer.  It is a combined system including the nearby village of Belgium.  There is one public school complex in Cedar Grove which consists of an elementary and middle school separated by a gymnasium and swimming pool along with a new high school constructed in 1999.  Total enrollment in the school system is approximately 1,000 students.
